Looks like the $1.5 billion and extensive scouting trips to the real Venice paid off, with the Venetian coming out as the clear winner in our "favorite themed casino" poll. Even though the gondolas are motorized, the "canals" somewhat short, and the spontaneous opera singers a little grating if you're trying to enjoy a quiet "outdoor" lunch at Postrio, we concur that the Venetian resort certainly smells better than the real thing and the lobby area is pretty spectacular.
Bellagio came out ahead in the "best of the rest" category, and while votes for the MGM Grand (the "Emerald Forest" theming was never much more than a token gesture, save the green neon, and is not in evidence today), the Las Vegas Hilton, Flamingo, Fremont, Cannery, Riviera, Golden Nugget, Riviera, Silverton, Stratosphere, Terrible's, and Red Rock left us slightly bemused, here are some of your other comments and observations:
- "I like the old Binion's... Remember when casinos had a gambling theme?"
- "I like the Tropicana. Wish it would upgrade, but I like the 'tropical paradise' theme."
- "Our favorite themed hotel-casino is Mandalay Bay. We were puzzled as to why it wasn't listed as a choice, unless perhaps you and others don't consider it 'themed.' However, with its South Pacific decor and ambience, we view it as such. We like the lovely and spacious rooms (great bathrooms!), the large, attractive casino (well-stocked with the games we like), the quality and variety of the dining options; and the friendly and attentive staff. They also give us nice comps -- and we win there!"
- "The original Treasure Island."
- "I know some say that themes are outdated and cheesy. I disagree! The themes of the hotel-casinos distinguishone property from another. Otherwise' they are all just large halls filled with slot machines, gaming tables and a few restaurants, and I can get that at my local casino anytime. I have brought several newbies to Vegas, some of whom are not big gamblers, and the themed hotels were a great way to show them Vegas. The attention to detail still amazes me. If/when the themes die out, I for one will be disappointed."

| Should online gambling be regulated and legalized in the U.S.? Pick whichever answer best fits how you feel. |
(1275) Yes, although I don’t like to play online myself, I think everyone should have the right to.
|
 (27%) |
(1104) Yes, and I would play online for money if it was clearly legal.
|

(848) Yes, I never stopped playing online but would be happier if it was definitely legal and regulated.
|
 (18%) |
(839) No, there have been too many scandals and I don’t trust that it can be regulated.
|
 (17%) |
(733) No, I think online casinos result in underage gambling and addiction.
|
 (15%) |
As expected, we got a passionate response on this one—the total of 4,799 was one of the biggest single-vote tallies ever. As has been the case with every poll we’ve seen on online gambling, there was resounding support for legalization. However, the spread in the Yes/No percentages was more narrow than in other polls we’ve seen. With all three Yes categories totaled, 68% were in favor of legalization, while 32% were opposed via two No categories. That’s a convincing majority, but less than the 75%-92% (in favor) that we’ve seen from other sources.
Our poll was different from most on this subject in that it gave options to qualify a Yes or No vote, and that yielded some interesting results. For starters, considering the 17% who voted No due to "recent scandals," it could be argued that as high as 85% would be in favor if online gambling was properly regulated. But it also illustrates that online problems (hole-card spying in poker likely being the most prominent) are not going unnoticed. We also found it interesting that the traditional 15% or so that are categorically opposed to online gambling exist even here, on a Las Vegas and gambling site.
The main reason for a Yes vote was the basic rights-and-liberties argument—"if they want to play, let ‘em play." And a solid 41% indicated that they either do already, or would, gamble online if there was proper regulation. It’s a result that causes us to reflect on earlier plans to act as a go-between for players and reputable sites. We don’t foresee reliable regulation in the near future, but responsible third-party oversight seems to be the next best thing—but only if that third party had enough clout with the online sites to exert influence.
Thanks to all who voted on this important matter.

Slot clubs are different. Some are generous in room comps, others in food and entertainment comps, and still others in cashback and/or bounceback. Depending on who you are and what you want, different givebacks will have different values for you. For example, if you visit Las Vegas often, a club that gives you free rooms is important. However, if you live in Las Vegas, you may be more interested in cashback. Consequently, it's difficult to pick one single best slot club unless you specify "best for what." This poll did not specify, so it's a mingling of different preferences. Still, with almost 2,000 votes cast, there's value in the blended preferences, but a clear win for Harrah's Total Rewards. Here's some of the feedback you sent us about how you picked:
- "While I read a lot negative of comments about Harrah's and the Total Rewards program, my wife and I have been happy with our experience. Many choices of where to stay, places to eat, and shows to see. Free rooms and we charge dinners and shows to the room, then use reward credits to cover the bill."
- Harrah’s is the best players club for me, although it becomes less wonderful as HET continues to tighten their games. The best thing about Harrah’s is that they are nationwide, so they offer nationwide opportunities. I started playing in their Vegas casinos and then they started sending me frequent offers from their other casinos. This prompted me to visit New Orleans for the first time ever, pre-Katrina. I have now been to wonderful New Orleans five times. Post-Katrina, Harrah’s NOLA was desperate for players so they offered me a free cruise (7-day Western Caribbean, balcony cabins!), which was by far the best comp I have ever been offered. They have since raised their play requirements for cruises, so that I no longer qualify… but I fell in love with cruising again after a 30-year hiatus, and am now buying my own cruises!
"My second choice would be Venetian/Palazzo. For a while they were very welcoming to Harrah’s refugees, but they have now tightened their VP so much that it appears they are unplayable. Excellent rooms and restaurants, if you pay $0 rather than $5,000, if you know what I mean."
- "I voted for Harrah's because of all the players clubs I have joined, Harrah's has sent me the best offers consistently. I have never been turned down when I've asked for a comp or show up without a reservation. The employees make me feel like family and not just another person.:
- "I wanted to vote for "other" because it's a toss up between MGM Group and Venetian/Palazzo. MGM give you cashback right on the machines and so-so room reductions, and then Venetian gives great room deals and so-so cash back.
- "We live in Florida and stay/play regularly at MGM Mirage properties in Las Vegas and Biloxi MS. We receive mailers and e-mails from the MGM Mirage Players Club on a near-daily basis and eagerly look forward to them. We find the comp offers that we receive to be quite generous for our level of play and we use them every time we visit an MGM Mirage property…They make it easy to redeem offers and often throw in extras without our asking. We like the FreePlay and PointPlay programs, which we think are generous, uncomplicated, easy to understand, and can be easily redeemed at any slot machine with your PIN. We belong to other players club programs, too, (Harrah's Total Rewards, Venetian Grazie, Wynn Red Club, and others) but find that they cannot compare to that of MGM Mirage. The high quality of the MGM Mirage properties, generous offers, and their friendly and professional staff keep us loyal customers."
- "The Vegas Club or Binion's. With the Vegas Club, I received a comped weekend after 2 afternoons of play."
- "The best one for the low-roller has got to be Terrible's. It doesn't take many points to be able to redeem for at least a small trinket on any given day. We stay there once a year and have managed to bring back a few t-shirts, a nice beach towel and toys for the kids all on a moderate amounts of 25-cent video poker play. Plus, you also get valuable offers through out the year that are actually usable, like on weekends. We are returning there in September based on a players club offer for four nights at an average cost of $44 per night (including a weekend!) that also includes a free breakfast buffet, $20 in slot play and a $10 gas card (which will be used to help refuel our economy rental car!)."
- "Silverton: Lots of promotions, drawings for cars or up to $100,000 dollars , gifts , 2,3 or 5X points days... The highest card level gives you almost everything for free and then you don't have to use points for food and rooms and instead you can buy merchandise in the gift store and the Bass Pro shop."
Other honorable mentions came in for the Cannery, Tuscany, South Point, and Casino Royale, to name a few.

It came as no great surprise that P F Chang's came out the winner -- the chains always seem to clinch it in the "Best of Las Vegas" polls, and in this instance we agree that P.F. Chang's is a cut above the average, consistent, and reasonably priced. Plus, the one at Planet Hollywood is open late, which is a bonus.
It's no secret that LVA's personal favorite is Diamond China (the original one on W. Sahara at Valley View), which serves the best hot & sour soup we know of, plus great beef chow fun, seafood, and vegetable dishes. And it's open really late.
We've had more than a few requests for a poll on the best dim sum, which seemed a little too specific, but #2 pick Ping Pang Pong at the Gold Coast is a great dim sum play we can definitely recommend, as is Chang's Hong Kong Cuisine (which is definitely the real deal -- closest thing to New York's Chinatown we've found in Vegas).
It's a shame so few of the people who voted for the "other" option revealed what their favorite Chinese restaurant was, but here's a selection from those of you who did:
- "The Dragon Noodle Company inside the Mirage is the best! The food was not only very authentic but prepared so perfectly. The beef was so tender and juicy as well as the duck. I can almost taste it now. Strike that, I want to taste it now! The staff was incredibly friendly and I would recommend this place to anyone who wants an authentic Chinese meal."
- "China Ginger at 5035 S. Fort Apache Rd." [Ed: Hmm. We have a coupon for this place but haven't tried it yet. Your vote has inspired us to give it a shot. We'll report back...]
- "My vote goes to Buffet Asia, at various locations. On weekends this buffet has lobster in ginger and green onions, which is included in the price of $16.00. With 4 soup choices, Mongolian BBQ, and just about anything you could ask for, this place tops the list."
- "Chin Chin in NY-NY. Tucked way in the back and small, but has been here for years and is DELICIOUS. We always manage to find our way here at least once a trip." [Ed: Several people picked this place.]
- "Koji at the Orleans is my favorite. Not just my Vegas favorite, my favorite anywhere."
- "Orchids Garden on W. Sahara at Lindell. Dim Sum all day until closing." [Ed: We hadn't been here in a long while and revisited on the strength of your suggestion. Agreed, the dim sum was decent, but in our estimation not up to Chang's Hong Kong Cuisine or even Ping Pang Pong. They had some interesting specials on the blackboard that we'd like to go back and try, however.]
- "Noodle Asia at the Venetian."
- "My husband and I found that the absolutely best Chinese restaurant in Las Vegas is the Garden of the Dragon at the Las Vegas Hilton."
- "Anywhere Purple Reign is playing." [Ed: Oops! Think this person got their vote in for the best live-music venue a little late. That poll closed in April!]

A huge and interesting response to our last poll. Results indicate that while a good chunk of people will not be making any changes to their usual Vegas visitation habits, the majority of respondents will keep Vegas in their travel plans but cut back somewhat, whether on the number of visits or how much they’re prepared to budget for their vacation.
While only 2% (178 voters) indicated that they’re finding positive fallout from the current economic climate and will be traveling to Vegas more often due to receiving better deals, our own recent findings indicate that this group may grow in numbers as savvy travelers start to take advantage of the incentives Vegas is beginning to offer, albeit it subtly so far. Our annual (see current "Spotlight" feature) found hotel accommodation at its cheapest in a half-decade, often with all kinds of add-ons like dining offers, gambling matchplays, and even major discounts on your next airfare. With airlines cutting services left and right and gas prices proving a deterrent to visitors who normally drive here, the local market's being particularly wooed, with Strip casinos bending over backwards to lure us from the suburbs with come-ons like better returns on machines, free drinks, and dining and hotel-room specials. Cool!
As usual, you sent us great feedback as to how and why you voted. Here are some of the highlights:
- "Still go to Vegas twice a year. We patronize the properties that offer specials and use coupons more."
- "Being from the Midwest, the air fares are the killer. In the past we'd fly out of South Bend, Indiana on Allegiant Air...Now that airfares have more than doubled and even tripled in price, our number of visits will decline."
- "I’m looking for free rooms. If we get free rooms, then we come; if not then we go to Tunica. Vegas has gotten tight with their room offers compared to other locations and with the cost of airfare, we choose locations where we’re comped."
- "I'm actually considering extending my annual Labor Day trip due to some nice casino offers that coincide with a fairly slow time at work. I'd consider taking more trips if I had more free time available, but that isn't going to happen."
- "I come to Las Vegas 6 to 8 times a year and I currently see no changes that I will be making."
- "We’re finding deals by bundling hotel with airline. Cheaper than getting each separately. Also booking months ahead of trip."
- "I'm intending to spend more time at smaller casino locations (Laughlin, Wendover, Reno) to get away from the high priced Vegas Strip."
- "I am not changing my travel plans at all when it comes to Vegas. Regardless of the economy, Vegas is Vegas and I love it!"
- "Eating cheaper and avoiding most if not all shows…Not a fan of Bette, Cher, or the guy with the red piano. Have seen two Cirque shows and did not like either one. Best shows seem to be the less expensive ones…There will be some belt tightening on Vegas trips – things have gotten way too expensive so it’s time to bring them back down to earth."
- "Actually, I’d add that when I do visit Las Vegas (usually 3-4 times a year), I’m now planning on staying longer to maximize my time there. The cost of driving makes this a better plan. Bargains? I’ve noticed that Laughlin seems to have been affected and/or they are just in the midst of marketing new promotions."
- " Even before the latest round of rising prices began, we started renting a car and gambling at local casinos. We usually still stay on the Strip, (or rent a timeshare at Hilton/Signature) to be closer to shows and dining, and we'll play a little at the Strip properties, but we play longer sessions at local places. The staff, stakes/odds, and comps are better. Due to the comps, we'll even be staying off the Strip next time."
- "Vegas is looking like a bargain to me. Southwest flights are still the same price, the hotels have slashed their rates and the nightclub payola investigation has mostly ended the excessive tipping. Drink prices are dropping and coupons and discounts are everywhere...and just wait until the 15,000 rooms that are under construction now are open -- hotels will have to slash room rates to try to fill them. I just stayed at the Palazzo for $139 a night, and this included Sat. night. As soon as I got home I received an offer from them to stay for free for 4 nights if I came back. The way I see it, Las Vegas will be an unbeatable value for the next few years: Even if the airline ticket prices double, the discounted rooms will more than cover it. I see it as the best time to go to Las Vegas since 9/11...maybe better."

Thanks to everyone who wrote in with their own suggestions and variations on the options we offered. Here are some of the ones we thought were worth sharing, either because they sounded plausible or they amused us:
- "You don't have menudo on the list." [Ed: You're right. That spicy Mexican tripe soup is indeed widely regarded as a hangover cure. Makes sense that lining your own abused stomach with someone else's might be a good move, but tripe the morning after... Just not sure if we could.]
- "Bottle of Gatorade and 2 aspirin before I go to bed and some vitamin B complex." [Ed: A lot of people also advocate taking aspirin before you start drinking.]
- "When I was a young 'lounge lizard' I tried all sorts of pre-emptive strikes on the dreaded hangover...until I found that when I got home and ate a couple of good cheese danishes (protein/carbs/sugar) and washed 'em down with a really large O.J. ( orange juice)...it never failed!"
- "Eat two 'turtles' chocalate/caramel clusters before going to bed. Nada aches in the morning." [Ed: What? Are you quite sure about that?!]
- "I had a great physical science teacher in college and he told the class that we would remember this one thing LONG after we had forgotten everything else we learned in his class: To prevent a hangover eat a very greasy meal before you start drinking (chili’s the best) and when you get home take two aspirin with a full glass of water before going to sleep. Works every time!" [Ed: Someone find that teacher and buy him a drink. And a bowl of chili...and couple of aspirin!]
- "I was told this by an alcoholic...and it works! A large vanilla milkshake -- it coats your stomach."
- "Alka Seltzer makes the greatest product in the world. It's called Wake Up Call (was previously called Morning Relief). It's nothing but aspirin and caffeine and it kicks a hangover to the curb. Available at Wal-mart, Walgreeens, and most major pharmacies."
- "A Dr Pepper and a spicy burrito (and maybe a painkiller or two)."
- "Since I have now come to the point in my life (over 40) that hangovers can occur (never had this problem when I was younger), I have found a product that works wonders! Sold at most drug stores next to the antacids and heart burn relief products is a red and yellow box labeled 'Chasers.' These are simply a charcoal filter capsule and the cost is only a few dollars for a box of 30 capsules. Take 2 capsules before you start drinking and one additional capsule every 3 or 4 drinks, and not only will it keep you from having the dreaded 'spins' when you lay down, but you wake up feeling 'normal' and ready to attack a new day in Vegas! I have Chasers tucked into every suitcase interior pocket.....they really are amazing!"
- "Soda and Bitters will do the trick. Just close your eyes and swallow it quick!"
- "Sleep then jump in a pool.
- "Hair of the dog always does it for me."
- "I drink Emergen-C Vitamin Energy Booster both before (if I can), when I get back to my room at night , and in the morning....works like a champ for me."
- "A can of Campbell's mushroom soup with tons of crackers."
"Canada Dry ginger ale. Cured every hangover I ever had!"
- "A bowl of chili on the left side...a bowl of favorite ice-cream on the right side..alternate spoonfuls of chili and ice cream." [Ed: Nah, you're just messing with us. Aren't you?!]
And now here are some LVA staff recommendations:
"Egg whites + tablespoon sugar + 1/2 cup of milk. Cleans ya right out..." (Michael)
"Drink a full 8 oz of water. Water is used to metabolize alcohol so if you don't have enough in reserve. water will be drawn from tissue, exacerbating hangover symptoms. And start with good bourbon to begin with." (Dale)
"The one thing I really miss about living in the South.....Goody's Headache Powders." (Lori)
"One thing I've learned working here is that the best cure for a hangover is 'hangover soup.' A big bowl of Pho does wonders. If that's not an option, a big breakfast and a spicy Bloody Mary. Other than that water, Advil, water, sleep, and more water. Then a promise to the gods that I'll NEVER do that again." (Becki)
"The most effective (and popular amongst HP staffers past and present) is a
steamy hot bowl of Pho, with loads of rooster sauce in it. By the time you've finished the bowl, all remaining toxins will have been sweated out and you'll feel right as rain. A properly spicy Bloody Mary always does the trick, but is not suggested for work-day hangovers. The Marys at Wynn are the best -- fresh and spicy." (Bethany)

| If you hit a huge jackpot like Megabucks, would you allow yourself to be photographed and used for publicity purposes, or would you choose to keep the win anonymous? And why? |
(2005) No, I would choose to remain anonymous.
|
 (66%) |
(904) Yes, I'd allow the casino to use my name and image for publicity.
|
 (30%) |
(126) Did you vote Yes or No? Email us why.
|

Not only a massive response vote-wise, but we also got well over a hundred emails explaining why you voted "yes" or "no." While we weren't surprised by the landslide victory for the "nos," there were a lot of people who voted "yes" and told us why. Here are some of the highlights, plus some LVA staffers' thoughts on the subject. Thanks to all for taking the time to take part.
NO
- "There are simply too many charities and unscrupulous individuals out there and I don’t want to be a target."
- "I voted no because I wouldn’t want to be stopped by everyone who sees the pic. and recognized me and asked about it over and over again. I’m not really a person who likes to talk about themselves."
- "I look horrible in pictures."
- "I voted ‘no’ because when I was younger, I used to want to be rich and famous. Now, I just want to be rich and anonymous!"
- "I'd definitely stay anonymous if I could. My husband and I won $625,000 on state lottery jackpot a few months ago and the only people we told were family. Coworkers, neighbors and acquaintances weren't told. We just felt that people would not treat us the same if they knew we had won that much money."
- "If I was being paid to advertise it might be a different story, but I paid $2 a spin, it wasn't free. So, no thanks on the photo op!"
- "I voted no because that kind of money would be new to me and I'd have enough problems getting used to it without having all the publicity with the resulting wave of people wanting me to share or buy their product."
- "Too many horror stories of big winners whose lives ended poorly."
- "Never mind the people that I don't know, who are ready to pounce the moment I hit Megabucks, Members of MY OWN family are a bunch of thieving vultures!! No way would I let ANYONE know I won the jackpot!"
YES
"I would allow it as I have one of the most miserable faces on Earth and people would think... boy if that loser can hit a jackpot, then anyone can."
"[I would] allow my win to be advertised. Why? So that when people I know or even don’t know want to borrow money, I could ask them, ‘where you when I didn’t have any? Now you can kiss my you-know-what!’
"I’d want everyone in the world to know I won Megabucks. I’m not worried about people hounding me for money or investment opportunities. I’m a ‘pit bull’ when it comes to getting rid of unwanted solicitations. I already know how I would spend and invest the money."
"I think that it would get out anyway, so might as well have fun with the attention."
"I have nothing to hide and Uncle Sam is going to get his portion no matter what. I could call it my 15 minutes of fame."
I voted Yes! I'm 72 years old, so why not? I would get a lawyer, accountant, and a new cell phone and not give out my new phone number to anyone."
"I am a YES!!! I've always dreamed of being in the back page of Strictly Slots magazine with my funny life-changing story. (My boyfriend -- soon to be husband -- says ‘no’...too many people coming to try and get money from from you. We are having our Vegas wedding in June but I doubt that we will have to worry about this problem...lol. But thanks for asking -- good question."
Some LVA Staff Feedback
- "I'd disappear off the face of the planet. For the obvious reason that friends and relatives I never had would suddenly appear." (Gary – Bookkeeper)
- "No way...because I value my privacy and I'd be concerned about identity theft and scam artists." (Lori – Research Assistant)
- "No, because I don't want my face plastered all over a casino that I might have or want to go back to." (Boston – Shipping)
- "Absolutely not. I take my cue from the book I Did It: My Life After Megabucks by John Tippin, a cautionary tale, if there ever was one, about revealing to the world your new identity as a multi-millionaire. Everything changes, for the worse, when people know you've suddenly come into (unearned) wealth. A further disincentive is the fact that, if you opt for the lump sum, after the discount and taxes, you wind up with less than half of the announced jackpot, and if you opt for the annuity, you get a tiny fraction of the total every year. Try explaining either to the bloodsuckers." (Deke – Senior Editor)
- "I'd choose to remain anonymous. Why? Because I don't want any distant relatives or old friends coming out of the woodwork asking me for money. I'm surrounded by enough relatives who are leeches and moochers." (Audrey – Receptionist)
- "Sure, why not? Let the world know that bald men are not only très sexy, but lucky too!" (Dale – Web Developer)

With its sandy beaches, wave machine, lazy river, poolside casino, and concert series, it's no great surprise that Mandalay Beach was the clear winner in this poll. Interestingly, however, the Flamingo held onto the #2 spot for a long while, before being passed by the Tropicana. They both have a lot to offer -- for details of all their amenities, check out our unique Cool Pools feature, where we're profiling the best of Las Vegas's pools all summer long, with photo galleries, reviews, event listings, and reader comments (feel free to add your own and upload your poolside party pics!)
Here's some of the excellent feedback we received on how you picked your favorite pool:
- "I like Like both the Lagoon and GO areas [at the Flamingo]. The Lagoon area can be crowded but fun, the GO area much more secluded and peaceful. Beautiful surroundings. Can walk around and enjoy the fish and birds; feels so away from the Strip, like being in another world. Great poolside service."
- "Main pool at Caesars. OH YEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
- "The Rio. Several pools to pick from. Plus, you can place your lounge chair wherever you want, instead of them being placed touching each other where you have to climb on from the bottom. Not easy when you're a senior."
- "By far the best pool is Bellagio – absolutely luxurious and utterly relaxing."
- "My pick for the best pool is the Mirage main pool. My husband and I have been staying at the Mirage for years and one of the reasons we stay there is because of the great pool. We have checked out other hotel pools and there is no comparison to the Mirage’s pool. The Mirage’s pool has a great tropical feel with all of the beautiful palm trees and foliage, where other pools are surrounded by concrete. The pool is crowed at times, but that is because it is so nice. The Mirage serves great drinks out by the pool too!"
- "The Hard Rock. My god, isn't it obvious? It's as close to Hef's mansion as a regular joe like me will ever get."
- "The Golden Nugget pool because the sharks and the lounge area."
- "The Hard Rock pool. It’s got the best beach, babes, and booze! What more do you need?"
- "I picked the MGM Grand because it has just about everything you could ask for in a pool complex. MGM's area has sunny/shady spots, cabanas, bars, shops, lockers, a lazy river, 5 pools, and 3 waterfalls. There's always at least one pool open. BYO sunscreen."
- "We loved the lazy river pool at the Monte Carlo and at Mandalay Bay. It's the most relaxing water experience. But, we were more comfortable at the Monte Carlo since we are middle aged and Mandalay Bay seems to have more kids and young adults."
- "Red Rock of course! I love it there!"
- "I picked the Tropicana pool. It is 5-7 acres of relaxing space, which includes a waterfall and a slide. While it’s not as fancy as the wave pool at Mandalay, it is much more easily accessible and it’s friendly. It has swim-up blackjack on occasion. It’s the easy access and décor that appeals to me."
- "I picked Las Vegas Hilton for its easy but secure access with lots of space. I enjoy the happy hour and entertainment without being crowded. Staff are very friendly. Just a nice place to unwind."

(1160) I come to Las Vegas to relax and get away from it all. I gamble for fun and don’t want to have to study it.
