Sports Betting

The Casino Edge

The standard bet-$11-to-win-$10 football-betting proposition gives the casino a 4.5% advantage. Casino sports books sometimes run promotions that allow you to bet less than this standard -110 price. Possible variations are ‘lay prices’ of -108 and -105. The -108 reduces your expected loss to 3.7%; the -105 reduces your expected loss to -2.4%.

Football Contests

Season-long football contests are very popular. In addition to being a fair gamble (often positive-equity tournaments used as loss leaders), football contests provide a lot of bang for your gambling buck. Entry fees of $25-$50 provide four months worth of action, especially if you are picking well and remain in the hunt for one of the top prizes. Most tournaments are structured to pay winners for best overall (season) and weekly records. That means that even if you’re out of contention for the overall championship, you can still win a large weekly prize right up to the end of the contest. Unfortunately, you must submit picks every week, which eliminates everyone except locals, and those who travel to Las Vegas several times a month (and perhaps those who have relatives in town). Sports books usually begin taking tournament entries in August. Casinos that can be counted on to sponsor tournaments with entry fees of $50 or less include: Coast Casinos, Stations Casinos, The Hard Rock, and The Palms.
